How to Winterise Your Caravan for the Cold Months

Winter can be harsh on caravans, but with proper preparation, you can protect your investment and avoid costly damage. Winterising your caravan is a crucial task that every UK caravan owner should undertake before the cold months arrive.

Water System Protection

The first priority is protecting your water systems from freezing. Drain all fresh water tanks completely, including the boiler and pipes. Use a caravan antifreeze product specifically designed for caravans—never use automotive antifreeze, as it's toxic. Flush the system through your taps and shower until the antifreeze runs clear. This prevents ice blockages that could damage pipes and fittings.

Battery and Electrical Care

Your leisure battery is vulnerable to cold weather. If possible, remove it and store it indoors in a warm, dry location. If you must leave it in the caravan, disconnect it and use a trickle charger to maintain charge levels. Check all connections are clean and corrosion-free before storage.

Damp Prevention

Moisture is a caravan owner's biggest enemy during winter. Open the roof vents slightly to allow air circulation, but install damp traps or moisture absorbers inside. Silica gel, calcium chloride, or dedicated caravan dehumidifiers work well. Leave cupboard doors and drawers open to improve airflow, and consider using a caravan cover to protect the exterior whilst allowing ventilation underneath.

Exterior Checks

Inspect the roof, seals, and windows for cracks or damage. Water ingress during winter can cause serious problems. Clean gutters and check that water runs away properly. Apply a protective sealant to any vulnerable areas. Check your caravan cover is secure and won't flap in winter winds.

Tyres and Chassis

Ensure tyres are properly inflated—underinflation is common in winter. Consider whether you need to use corner steadies to level the caravan. Clean the chassis and undercarriage to remove salt and grime that accelerates corrosion.

Regular Checks

Even in storage, visit your caravan monthly to check for problems. Look for signs of damp, inspect the cover, and run the engine briefly if you haven't used it for a while. This helps identify issues early.

Taking time to winterise properly saves money on repairs and ensures your caravan is ready for adventures when spring arrives. Most tasks take a weekend and cost relatively little compared to fixing winter damage.
