Caravan Tyre Safety: When to Replace and How to Maintain Them

Caravan tyres are often overlooked, yet they're critical for safety and handling. Many breakdowns and accidents involve tyre failure that could have been prevented with proper maintenance.

Age Matters More Than Mileage

Caravan tyres degrade with time, not just use. Tyres older than five years should be checked annually by a professional; those over ten years old should be replaced regardless of tread depth. Check the tyre's age by looking at the sidewall for a four-digit code—the last two digits indicate the year of manufacture. A code ending in "23" means 2023.

Because caravans are often stored unused for months, tyres age faster than on regularly driven vehicles. This makes age-based replacement essential.

Tread Depth Requirements

UK law requires 1.6mm tread depth across the central three-quarters of the tyre. However, caravan safety experts recommend replacing tyres at 2mm, particularly for caravans where handling and braking are more critical. Check depth using the penny test: insert a 1p coin into the tread. If you can see the top of the coin, tread is below 1.6mm and replacement is urgent.

Pressure and Load Rating

Check tyre pressures monthly and before every journey. Pressures should be found in your caravan handbook or on a placard near the entrance. Under-inflated tyres overheat, wear prematurely, and increase fuel consumption. Over-inflation causes harsh rides and uneven wear. Never guess—use an accurate gauge.

Verify your tyres have the correct load rating for your caravan's weight. Caravan tyres have higher load ratings than car tyres; using car tyres on a caravan is dangerous and illegal.

Damage and Wear Patterns

Inspect tyres weekly for cuts, bulges, or unusual wear patterns. Uneven wear suggests tracking problems or incorrect pressures. Bulges indicate internal damage and mean immediate replacement is needed. Don't attempt to repair caravan tyres; any puncture typically requires replacement.

Winter Considerations

Winter tyres aren't essential for caravans in the UK, but many owners switch to them for improved grip in cold weather. If you do, check pressures more frequently as they change significantly with temperature. Before storage, ensure pressures are at recommended levels to prevent flat-spotting.

Storage and Maintenance

Clean tyres with soapy water and dry thoroughly before storage. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and ozone sources (like electric motors). If possible, slightly reduce pressure during long storage to minimise stress.

When to Replace

Replace tyres when tread reaches 2mm, they're over ten years old, or show damage. Tyre failure at speed is dangerous and expensive. Prevention is far cheaper than the consequences.

Regular tyre checks take minutes but could save your life and thousands of pounds in repairs.
